Atomfall Proves Profitable at Launch, Sequel in Discussion
Atomfall, developed by Rebellion, has proven to be a major success since its launch on March 27, 2025, across multiple platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite a significant portion of its 2 million player base coming from Xbox Game Pass subscribers—who did not purchase the game directly—the title became "immediately profitable" upon release. Rebellion has highlighted Atomfall as their largest launch to date in terms of player numbers, attributing some of this success to the exposure provided by Game Pass.
In discussions with The Game Business, Rebellion confirmed that Atomfall quickly recouped its development costs. The studio is now exploring potential sequels or spin-offs while continuing to support the game with post-launch content and DLC.
Rebellion's CEO, Jason Kingsley, previously spoke to GamesIndustry.biz about the strategic advantage of launching on Game Pass. He noted that the service's inclusion did not cannibalize sales but rather offered a guaranteed income stream from Microsoft, which helps mitigate financial risks. Kingsley emphasized the marketing benefits of Game Pass, explaining how it introduces the game to a broader audience, potentially driving further sales through positive word-of-mouth.
While specific sales figures remain undisclosed, and the details of Microsoft's business agreements with developers are kept confidential, it's clear that both Rebellion and Microsoft have benefited from Atomfall's inclusion in Game Pass. The latest public data shows Xbox Game Pass had 34 million subscribers as of February 2024.
IGN's review praised Atomfall as a "gripping survival-action adventure" that successfully blends elements from Fallout and Elden Ring into a unique experience.
