Cyberpunk 2077 to Occupy 25% of Switch 2's Storage with 64GB Install

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 will require 64GB of storage. While this is notably smaller than the 100–110GB installs on Xbox and PS5, it represents a significant 25% of the Switch 2’s 256GB of internal storage—highlighting potential concerns over available space.

Launching alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, Cyberpunk 2077 will be available both as a physical 64GB game card and as a digital download via the Nintendo eShop. Unlike some upcoming Switch 2 titles that may include download-only keys on their game cards, Cyberpunk 2077 does contain the full game on the physical cartridge.

This raises an important question: how fast will the Switch 2’s internal storage fill up?

While 256GB is a major upgrade from the original Switch’s 32GB, early data suggests Switch 2 games will be significantly larger in size. For context, Tears of the Kingdom, one of the largest Switch 1 titles, required just 16GB. With Cyberpunk 2077 already at 64GB and high-profile releases like the $80 Mario Kart World likely demanding similar or greater space, storage management will quickly become a priority.

The solution? Expandable storage—specifically microSD Express cards. While the original Switch supported standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC formats, the Switch 2 exclusively uses microSD Express. This means older cards are incompatible, and users must invest in new, more expensive microSD Express models.

IGN’s deals team has already identified top-tier Switch 2-compatible microSD Express options from SanDisk and Lexar, including 128GB ($44.99), 256GB ($59.99), 512GB ($99.99), and 1TB ($199.99) variants. However, due to high demand, several of these cards are already listed as "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon.

Nintendo is also partnering with SanDisk and Samsung to release official branded microSD Express cards. Based on past trends, these co-branded versions may carry a premium price over identical third-party models. As demand grows, more manufacturers may enter the microSD Express market, though whether this will lead to lower prices remains uncertain.
