Bloodborne Fans Celebrate 10th Anniversary, Organize Yharnam Return Amidst No Sequel or Update
Today marks the 10th anniversary of Bloodborne, and fans are celebrating by organizing yet another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, has cemented the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the greatest in the industry. The game received widespread critical and commercial acclaim, setting the stage for what many believed would be a sequel akin to the Dark Souls series. However, a decade later, we've seen no remaster, sequel, or even a next-gen update to make Bloodborne playable at 60fps. This silence from Sony remains one of the most baffling decisions in gaming, as fans have continuously clamored for more.
Earlier this year, Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who has since left Sony, offered some insight into the situation during an interview with Kinda Funny Games. He clarified that his comments were purely his personal theory, not based on any insider information. "Bloodborne has always been the most asked thing," Yoshida stated. "And people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, even an update or a remaster. It should be easy, right? The company is known for doing so many remasters, right, some people get frustrated."I have only my personal theory to that situation. I left first-party so I don’t know what’s going on, but my theory is, you know, because I remember, you know, Miyazaki-san really, really loved Bloodborne, what he created. So I think he is interested, but he’s so successful and he’s so busy, so he doesn’t want, he cannot do himself, but he does not want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory. And the PlayStation team respect his wish. So that’s my guess, right? Theory. I am not revealing any secret information, to be clear."
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware, has indeed been busy. Since Bloodborne, he directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and the mainstream hit Elden Ring, which has led to a multiplayer spin-off. Miyazaki often deflects questions about Bloodborne, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP. However, he has acknowledged that the game could benefit from a release on more modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience. Yet, Sony has responded aggressively to these efforts. For instance, Lance McDonald, known for creating a 60fps mod for Bloodborne, received a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment four years after its release. Similarly, Lilith Walther, creator of Nightmare Kart and the Bloodborne PSX demake, faced a copyright claim on an old YouTube video of the demake.
Meanwhile, tech enthusiasts at Digital Foundry have reported a breakthrough in PS4 emulation via ShadPS4, allowing Bloodborne to be played from start to finish at 60fps on PC. This development prompted IGN to seek a comment from Sony, but no response was received.
As a result, Bloodborne fans continue to take matters into their own hands, organizing community events like today's "Return to Yharnam" celebration. This event encourages players to start new characters, summon as many random cooperators and invaders as possible, and leave in-game messages indicating their participation in this latest community initiative. It seems that, for now, such fan-driven events may be the only way to keep the spirit of Bloodborne alive.
