Stray Kite Studios, a Dallas-based game developer established in 2018, has officially announced their latest project, "Wartorn." This real-time strategy roguelite game promises to immerse players in a fantasy world filled with destructible environments, challenging moral decisions, and a visually striking painterly aesthetic. Slated for an early access release on both Steam and the Epic Games Store in spring 2025, Wartorn represents the studio's first original game, showcasing the talents of its approximately 30 employees, many of whom are industry veterans from renowned titles like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires.

Before Wartorn, Stray Kite Studios made their mark by developing the standalone version of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure, along with numerous creative maps for Fortnite. Now, with Wartorn, the studio ventures into uncharted territory with a narrative-driven game that follows the journey of two elven sisters striving to reunite with their family. Their path is fraught with peril, featuring intense combat and morally complex choices that shape the story and gameplay experience.

Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way

Set in a fantastical realm torn by chaos, Wartorn challenges players to navigate a world where destruction is not just a backdrop but a dynamic element of gameplay. The game's environments are physics-driven, ensuring that no two encounters are ever the same. This chaotic setting serves as the perfect stage for exploring themes of purpose, sacrifice, and survival. "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us," said Paul Hellquist, co-founder and creative director of Stray Kite Studios.

Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions

In Wartorn, players will face tough choices that go beyond mere strategy. Decisions such as which character to feed or whom to rescue from certain death will deeply affect the game's narrative and the uniqueness of each playthrough. Combat is equally dynamic, with a magic system that lets players mix and match elemental forces like fire, water, and lightning, each offering unique interactions and strategic applications. Whether it's electrifying enemies in water or igniting foes coated in tar, the possibilities are vast and varied.

As a roguelite, Wartorn incorporates a progression system where upgrades carry over between runs, gradually easing the challenge of completing the game's journey. The game's visuals are designed to evoke a painterly aesthetic, enhancing the dramatic feel of its setting. To ensure accessibility, Wartorn also features the ability to slow down action, allowing players to issue precise commands amidst the chaos.

With its early access launch planned for spring 2025 on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, Wartorn is poised to offer a fresh and engaging experience in the realm of real-time strategy roguelites.
