Kojima Seeks Real OD Feedback in 10-20 Years

With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach now released, Hideo Kojima's focus has shifted to the Xbox-published OD, a project he has called "a game I have always wanted to make."

Speaking with Ssense, Kojima reflected on the development and reception of Death Stranding 2, offering a brief hint about his upcoming work, including the enigmatic OD.

For those hoping for concrete details, Kojima remains as elusive as ever. He described the project as "something totally different... people will love it or hate it."

Interestingly, Kojima appears pragmatic about potential criticism. While he acknowledged he will likely read fan reactions on social media and watch video essays analyzing his work, he believes "the real evaluations come after — 10 or 20 years from now."

When Kojima first unveiled OD at The Game Awards 2023, he called it something "no one has seen before."

“It is a game, don’t get me wrong, but it’s at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media," he explained.

The trailer features performances by Sophia Lillis (It, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and Udo Kier (Hunters, Swan Song).

Just as the audience was processing the OD reveal, Get Out and Nope director Jordan Peele joined Kojima on stage. Peele expressed his admiration for Metal Gear Solid 2 and confirmed his collaboration on OD.

“He's been an inspiration to me, and the opportunity to collaborate with him is truly incredible," Peele said. "In my films, I’m always trying to maximize immersion, to put the audience in the main character’s shoes. Hideo is the master of this, and he does it on a whole other level. What he’s creating here is completely immersive, utterly terrifying, and I am absolutely honored to be collaborating with the GOAT. Let’s go.”

Kojima did not specify Peele's exact role in OD. However, he teased that more notable collaborators, yet to be revealed, are involved.

“What I can say right now is it’s not just Jordan. I have other creative partners with me on this project. I can’t really say who they are right now, but, I tell you, they are legends and they are amazing.”

As for when we might see more of OD, it's worth noting that in January, Kojima confirmed the video game actors strike impacted its production, as well as that of his upcoming Sony action-espionage title.

In a tweet, Kojima stated that Kojima Productions was forced to suspend actor scanning and filming for OD in late 2024 after the SAG-AFTRA video game actors' strike began in July.

Casting for Physint, Kojima's highly anticipated return to the "action espionage" genre, was also suspended. Kojima added that he hopes to resume production in 2025. Announced during a Sony State of Play, Physint may potentially target a PlayStation 6 release.

Despite being the creator of the seminal Metal Gear stealth series, Kojima admitted in the same interview that he does not plan to play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the remake of MGS3.
