Lies of P Director Clarifies Difficulty Adjustment: Aims for Broader Player Base
The highly anticipated DLC for Lies of P, titled "Overture," is set to introduce a groundbreaking feature for the game: difficulty options. This move marks a significant shift for Lies of P, a title renowned for its punishing difficulty typical of "Soulslike" games. Initially, the game's director, Jiwon Choi, expressed that the team believed Soulslike games should not include difficulty options, and as a result, Lies of P launched without them. However, Neowiz has now reconsidered this stance following extensive feedback from the player community.
Choi elaborated on this change in an interview with VGC, stating, "We wanted to make sure a wider audience of players could play the game. We have a lot of feedback from customers, and from our developers. So by making development adjustments and introducing these difficulty options, we can offer the experience to different types of players. This broadens the base."
The decision to add difficulty options has sparked a variety of reactions among the gaming community. Some players appreciate the inclusivity this brings, allowing those who may not have extensive gaming experience to enjoy Lies of P. One player shared, "I got into gaming around the age of 24. I'm using the easier difficulty settings because, as much as I love Lies of P, I have a major skill issue, and that's okay. I just thought it would be nice hearing why someone would reasonably want the difficulty settings. I never got to own any systems when I was a kid, so now I can as a working adult who doesn't have 10+ years of skills."
Others have expressed frustration, believing that the essence of Soulslike games lies in their challenging nature. A player on the Steam discussion forums lamented, "Was interested in playing, but after all the nerfs and adding difficulty levels, I lost interest. Game devs, please stop catering to babies," though the majority of responses to this thread supported Neowiz's decision. Another critic stated, "You had a masterpiece on your hands Neowitz, and you turned it into laughing stock. For shame." Meanwhile, a thread titled "Difficulty settings = Not playing" sits next to another where a player found the original difficulty "ridiculous."
Despite the mixed reactions, Lies of P continues to captivate players with its dark reimagining of the Pinocchio story, featuring a unique "lie" system that dynamically affects gameplay. The Overture DLC will not only introduce difficulty options but also new locations, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons. A new mode called "Death March" will allow players to challenge the game's bosses repeatedly. The DLC is estimated to take experienced players 15-20 hours to complete and will unlock after a specific chapter. Neowiz has also announced a full sequel to Lies of P.
Our review of Lies of P was favorable, awarding it an 8/10, with the comment, "Lies of P might not branch out particularly far from its soulslike inspiration, but it plays the part extremely well."
