Swarm Faction Unveiled in Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era
Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. The team delved into the inspiration behind the faction's design, tracing its evolution from a concept initially termed "Inferno" to the final, chillingly unique "Swarm," and its integration into the unfolding narrative on the continent of Jadame.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the enemy unit's level; the greater the disparity in unit levels, the more devastating the attack. Others, such as mantises, boast a tactical edge, selecting from three distinct abilities each round. A particularly gruesome yet effective trait is the ability of creatures like worms and locusts to consume corpses, restoring health and boosting their power—a skill that even the Swarm's heroes can master.
In Olden Era, the mantle of demonic threat falls upon this insectoid race, previously only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a mere insect colony into a devoted cult under a singular, powerful ruler. Each member is intrinsically linked to a vast collective consciousness, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who utilize an army comprised entirely of Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. Furthermore, Swarm troops can summon cocoons, their health directly proportional to the army's overall size. Upon hatching, these larvae bolster the ranks as temporary units, providing strategic flexibility on the battlefield.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is underscored by its unique abilities. The capacity to consume corpses for healing and empowerment, coupled with abilities that shift based on enemy strength, encourages direct confrontation and presents players with a dynamic, innovative combat strategy.
