The primary reason cited is concern over intellectual property rights. This announcement was made during an investor Q&A session focused on AI and game development.

Furukawa acknowledged AI's long-standing role in game development, particularly in NPC behavior control. However, he distinguished this traditional AI from the newer generative AI, capable of creating original text, images, and other data through pattern learning.

Furukawa explained, "In game development, AI-like technologies have long been used to control enemy character movements, so game development and AI have been intertwined for a long time."

Despite acknowledging generative AI's creative potential, Furukawa highlighted the IP rights challenges. He stated, "Generative AI can produce more creative outputs, but we're also aware of potential intellectual property rights problems." This concern likely stems from generative AI's potential for copyright infringement.

The Unique Nintendo Approach

He stated, "We have decades of expertise in creating optimal game experiences." He added, "While we're adaptable to technological advancements, we aim to deliver unique value that technology alone can't replicate."

Ubisoft, for instance, introduced Project Neural Nexus NEO NPCs, using generative AI for in-game conversations. Project producer Xavier Manzanares clarified that generative AI is merely a tool, stating, "GenAI is a tool, it's tech. It doesn't create games; it needs design and a team to utilize it effectively."

Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu views generative AI as a business opportunity, while EA CEO Andrew Wilson anticipates generative AI enhancing over half of EA's development processes.
