Battlefield Labs Lets Players Test Upcoming Games Before Release
Battlefield Labs: Shaping the Future of Battlefield Through Community Collaboration
Battlefield Studios, in partnership with Electronic Arts (EA), has launched Battlefield Labs, a revolutionary player feedback platform designed to directly involve the community in shaping future Battlefield installments. Announced on February 3, 2025, this initiative marks a significant step towards collaborative game development.
A New Era of Player Influence
The upcoming Battlefield game is entering a crucial development phase, and Battlefield Studios recognizes the invaluable contribution of player feedback. Selected players from European and North American servers will be invited to participate in the initial phase of Battlefield Labs, providing hands-on testing of new features and mechanics. Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, emphasizes the importance of this pre-alpha testing phase: "This game has immense potential. Battlefield Labs empowers our teams to unlock that potential by incorporating player feedback early in the process."
While participation is initially limited, Battlefield Studios assures the broader community will receive regular updates throughout the testing period. Future Battlefield titles are also planned to incorporate this collaborative approach.
The Battlefield Studios team comprises DICE (creators of the Battlefield franchise), Ripple Effect (developing a new experience for the series), Motive (developers of Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space), and Criterion (renowned for racing games and their contributions to Battlefield).
Testing Core Gameplay Elements
Battlefield Labs will focus on testing key aspects of the upcoming game. Players will be provided with "different pieces of an unfinished puzzle," allowing for timely integration of feedback. The testing will progress through several stages:
- Core Combat and Destruction: Initial testing will center on fundamental gameplay mechanics.
- Weapons, Vehicles, and Gadgets: Balance and feedback will be gathered on the game's arsenal.
- Maps, Modes, and Squad Play: Testing will culminate in evaluating the integration of all elements.
Two established modes, Conquest and Breakthrough, will also be included, providing opportunities to refine existing gameplay.
- Conquest: Large-scale battles focused on capturing control points (flags). Teams compete with a limited number of tickets, lost upon respawn or enemy flag control.
- Breakthrough: Asymmetrical gameplay where attackers strive to capture sectors while defenders impede their progress. A ticket system is in place, with attackers regaining tickets by securing sectors.
Refinement of the class system is another key focus area. While confident in their progress, Battlefield Studios values player input to achieve the optimal balance of form, function, and feel.
Battlefield Labs represents a significant commitment to community involvement, promising a more collaborative and player-driven development process for future Battlefield games.
