Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options

Recent reports confirm that Phantom Blade Zero will offer four distinct difficulty levels: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. Despite initial comparisons to Soulslike games due to its aesthetic and combat showcased at the PlayStation Showcase 2023, the inclusion of multiple difficulty options sets Phantom Blade Zero apart from the notoriously challenging Soulslike genre.

Game Director Soulframe clarified this distinction in a tweet following the game's feature at Summer Game Fest 2024, emphasizing that creating another Soulslike was never the intention. Instead, the focus is on delivering "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating."

While Phantom Blade Zero draws inspiration from Soulslike games with its multi-layered maps, multiple approach paths, and hidden areas, Soulframe insists that "the similarities stop there." He previously described the game as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.

Gameplay Features With Over 30+ Weapons, 20-30 Hours of Playthrough, And More

Further details from recent interviews reveal that Phantom Blade Zero will offer players a choice of over 30 primary weapons and 20 secondary weapons, each with unique gameplay mechanics and effects. The main story is expected to take around 20-30 hours to complete, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content to explore.

Boss fights in the game will feature at least two phases, with the innovative mechanic allowing players to restart from the second phase if they die, avoiding the need to replay the first phase. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," enables players to challenge previously defeated bosses and unlock new hidden bosses.

Additionally, there's a mechanic that influences the game's ending, though specifics on how it impacts the playthrough and the number of alternate endings remain undisclosed.
