NetherRealm Ends MK1 DLC, Shifts to Next Project

Warner Bros Confirms End of Mortal Kombat 1 Development

Warner Bros has delivered disappointing news to Mortal Kombat 1 players - the fighter won't receive any new DLC characters or story expansions following the Definitive Edition release. The announcement contradicts earlier promises from NetherRealm about long-term support.

MK1 Falls Short of Series Expectations

Despite selling 5 million copies and helping the franchise surpass 100 million lifetime sales, Mortal Kombat 1 hasn't matched predecessor MK11's record performance. The 2019 release became the series' best-seller with over 15 million copies moved - far exceeding MK1's current numbers.

Ed Boon's September 2024 tweet promising continued support now rings hollow as NetherRealm shifts focus entirely to its mystery project. The studio follows its established pattern - MK11 saw similar abandonment two years post-launch when development moved to MK1.

"We understand fan disappointment," Warner Bros stated, "but our team must concentrate fully on making the next project exceptional."

What's Next for NetherRealm?

The March 2025 T-1000 guest fighter marks MK1's final content update. Speculation now shifts to NetherRealm's next title, with Injustice 3 looking most likely given the studio's alternating franchise schedule.

Warner Bros Discovery leadership still views Mortal Kombat as a key franchise, naming it among four core gaming IPs during recent investor briefings. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie suggests the brand remains commercially viable despite MK1's struggles.

January's surprise "Floyd the Pink Ninja" secret encounter briefly revived community engagement, proving players still crave inventive post-launch content. This makes the development cutoff particularly frustrating for dedicated fans.

NetherRealm's Next Project: What's Coming?

The studio's pattern suggests Injustice 3 entered development months ago - meaning MK1 players hoping for more Kombat Packs or story DLC will need to wait for the next inevitable franchise revival cycle.
