Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted At as Sales Numbers Satisfies Obsidian and Microsoft
Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures. This positive reception has sparked discussions regarding potential expansions or a sequel to the game.
In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed her strong interest in continuing the franchise. Patel highlighted the established world and the experienced team as key assets for future development, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." While no official plans have been announced, her comments strongly suggest a desire to expand upon the Avowed universe.
A Challenging Development Journey
Patel also shared insights into the complex development process of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's acquisition by Microsoft, faced numerous hurdles. Initial plans underwent significant changes, including the removal of certain functionalities and the cancellation of multiplayer features. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project's trajectory. Patel described the challenges of managing a large team (over 80 people) and navigating substantial creative shifts. Despite the complexities, she emphasized the eventual coalescence of the project, stating, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together." The final product showcases a strong focus on the Pillars of Eternity lore and a shift from an open world to open zones.
Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The success of Avowed has also reignited interest in a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer confirmed significant internal interest in developing such a title. However, he acknowledged the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual fidelity, and overall scale. While a Pillars of Eternity 3 remains a priority for Sawyer (with a proposed budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3), the possibility of a tactics spin-off is certainly gaining traction.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates on the future of the Avowed franchise.
