"Jump Ship: Sea of Thieves Meets Left 4 Dead, Now More Polished and Fun"
It was almost exactly one year ago that I walked into a meeting at the Game Developer’s Conference and was first introduced to Jump Ship, a captivating four-player sci-fi PvE shooter that masterfully blends elements from Sea of Thieves, Left 4 Dead, and FTL into a unique gaming experience. Recently, I had the privilege of playing the latest build alongside some of the developers, and I can confidently say that if any indie game is poised to break out in this year's crowded market, Jump Ship is my top pick. As it gears up for an Early Access launch this Summer, the game is more polished and engaging than ever before.
If you're not yet familiar with Jump Ship, let me introduce you to this non-grindy space adventure designed for up to four players. Notably, the team at Keepsake Games is actively responding to player feedback and is developing innovative ways for solo players to enjoy the game. For those who prefer a single-player experience, Jump Ship will feature narratively driven AI assistants to help manage the ship. You can get a taste of this in the Prologue, which serves as both a tutorial—introducing you to key gameplay mechanics like shooting, flying in your space suit, and ship combat—and a lore-builder.

Jump Ship now boasts a compelling story that enriches its core PvE gameplay. The narrative revolves around a malicious virus that has infected machines across the galaxy, and it's up to you and your fellow Atirans to reach the heart of the galaxy and stop it. You'll navigate through procedurally generated mission chains in each sector, with missions varying in length from 10 minutes to an hour. The Jump Map's color-coded choices give you a sense of the danger level you're choosing to face, with higher risks promising greater rewards.
Aiding you on your journey is Iris, a non-infected AI you encounter in the Prologue, who serves as a narrator during your missions. This adds a welcome layer of structure to the robust gameplay foundation that Jump Ship offers. Additionally, the Hangar acts as your base of operations, where you can spend in-game currency to buy and customize outfits, explore the Galaxy Map, and even enjoy a game of soccer during your downtime.
Let's dive back into the heart of the four-player gameplay, which is nothing short of exhilarating. Missions rarely go as planned; your ship might be attacked en route, requiring one player to pilot and use the pilot's chair weapons, while another operates the ship's 360-degree-pivoting cannon. Meanwhile, the other two players could be mag-booted to the ship's hull, taking shots at enemy ships. If your ship sustains damage, someone must rush inside, grab a fire extinguisher, navigate through vents, and extinguish the flames—after all, you need to keep that pineapple pizza-maker in working order!

Upon reaching your destination, all four players disembark and navigate the structure to retrieve the coveted loot. You'll face relentless waves of infected robots, making teamwork crucial at every turn. Your grappling hook allows for swift movement both on the ground and in space, and once you secure the loot, one player must carry it back to the ship while the others provide cover.
Both my demo last year and the recent one were brief, yet they demonstrated that Jump Ship is incredibly fun even in short bursts, meaning you don't need to dedicate endless hours to enjoy it. However, I haven't yet experienced enough of the broader mission structure and the variety of procedurally generated content to fully assess its replayability. Nonetheless, everything I've seen so far points to Jump Ship having the potential to be a major hit. With all the right ingredients in place, I'm eagerly looking forward to playing much more of it.
