Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch
The highly anticipated release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 experienced a challenging launch, marked by significant server issues, bugs, and instability. Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed these concerns in a YouTube video.
Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers
Neumann and Wloch explained that while they anticipated high player interest, the actual volume significantly exceeded expectations, overwhelming the game's infrastructure. The initial login process involves servers retrieving data from a database with a cache. While tested with 200,000 simulated users, the actual player count far surpassed this, causing the system to buckle under the strain.
Login Queues and Missing Content
Attempts to mitigate the issues by increasing queue size and speed proved temporary. The team discovered that server saturation caused repeated service restarts and retries, resulting in prolonged loading times and the infamous 97% loading screen freeze. Furthermore, reported missing aircraft and content stemmed from incomplete data retrieval due to the overloaded servers.
Negative Steam Reviews Reflect Launch Problems
The launch difficulties have led to overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews, reflecting player frustration with login queues and missing content. Despite these challenges, the development team assures players that they are actively working to resolve the issues and restore a smooth gaming experience. An update on the Steam page states that the problems are being addressed and player access is being stabilized. A sincere apology for the inconvenience and a commitment to continued updates were also issued.
