The announcement of Space Marine 3's development sent ripples of excitement and concern throughout the Warhammer 40,000 community. Just six months after the release of Space Marine 2, publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the surprise reveal in mid-March. This news came at a time when fans were already questioning the future content updates for Space Marine 2.

In response to these concerns, both companies issued a statement via a new blog post. They reassured fans that Space Marine 3's development would not detract from their commitment to Space Marine 2. "Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support," the statement began. They clarified, "So let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain."

Space Marine 2's year one roadmap is still on track, with Patch 7 scheduled for mid-April. In the coming months, players can look forward to a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons. The developers teased, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)" They emphasized that the announcement of Space Marine 3 was merely the beginning of a new project, years away from release, and expressed their gratitude for the community's support.

The big reveal of a new class has sparked speculation among fans. Many believe it might be the Apothecary, a role akin to a medic within the Space Marines. However, there's also hope for the Librarian class, which would introduce powerful warp-based abilities. As for the new melee weapon, fans are particularly excited about the possibility of seeing the axe from Secret Level's Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, with some modders already bringing this idea to life.

The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 was not unexpected, given the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following the launch of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at the potential for story DLC and mentioned that ideas for Space Marine 3 were already in discussion. He noted, "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel... Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting..." This suggests a strong narrative continuation, with IGN reporting on the likely enemy faction to appear in Space Marine 3.
