Project Century and Virtua Fighter Project Shows Sega's Willingness to Take Risks

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is known for its bold approach to game development, and this is largely thanks to Sega's willingness to venture beyond the safety of established IPs. This philosophy has allowed RGG Studio to take on multiple large-scale projects simultaneously. Let's delve into what's on the horizon from the Like a Dragon studio.

RGG Studio, also known as Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is currently developing several significant projects, including a brand new IP. In addition to the highly anticipated next installment in the Like a Dragon series and a Virtua Fighter remake set for release in 2025, the studio has announced two more ambitious titles. Masayoshi Yokoyama, the head and director of RGG Studio, credits Sega's adventurous spirit for these opportunities, highlighting the Japanese game publisher's openness to taking risks.

In December, RGG Studio released trailers for two distinct projects within the same week. At The Game Awards 2025, they unveiled Project Century, a new IP set in Japan during 1915. The following day, Sega's official channel showcased the trailer for the new Virtua Fighter Project, which is separate from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster. Both projects signify the studio's commitment to large-scale, ambitious productions. Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's ability to deliver stems from a combination of trust and a desire to explore new ventures.

Yokoyama shared with Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media, "I think a good aspect of Sega is that it accepts the possibility of failure. It doesn’t just keep pursuing the kind of projects it knows are a safe bet." He further elaborated that this risk-taking is part of Sega's DNA, recalling how the company experimented with the Virtua Fighter IP in its early days, leading to the creation of the action-adventure series Shenmue after contemplating turning 'VF' into an RPG.

Despite juggling multiple projects, RGG Studio assures fans that the quality of their work will not suffer, particularly with the Virtua Fighter series. The series' creator, Yu Suzuki, has expressed his support for the new project. Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada and their team, are determined to avoid producing anything substandard.

Yamada added, "With the new ‘VF,’ we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’ Whether you're a fan of the series or not, we hope you'll look forward to more information. Stay tuned!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that gamers will eagerly anticipate both titles.
