Nintendo Switch 2 Games in Japan Mostly Game-Key Cards, Similar in West
The landscape of physical game distribution for the Nintendo Switch 2 has taken an interesting turn, particularly with the introduction of Game-Key Cards. In Japan, almost all third-party Nintendo Switch 2 games revealed so far are being released as Game-Key Cards, with the notable exception of CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. These cards require an internet connection to download the full game, marking a shift from traditional physical media. Titles like Ys X: Proud Nordics and No Sleep for Kaname Date are among those utilizing this format in Japan, while Split Fiction is listed as a code-in-a-box.
In the West, the trend continues with Sega's Switch 2 games, such as Sonic X Shadow Generations, also being released as Game-Key Cards. However, there are a few exceptions to this trend, including Cyberpunk 2077, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion - Nintendo Switch 2, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma - Nintendo Switch 2, and No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES Aiba Edition, which come with the full game on the cartridge.
Nintendo has confirmed that some Switch 2 game cards will not contain the actual game but instead a key for downloading it. This approach is clearly labeled on the packaging, ensuring consumers are aware of what they are purchasing. Games like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster are part of this new system, while others like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not use Game-Key Cards. Notably, the large-sized Cyberpunk 2077, at 64 GB, is available on a full cartridge.
The use of Game-Key Cards is expected to put significant pressure on the eShop servers at the Switch 2's launch on June 5, as noted by Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners. He highlighted the potential strain due to the global simultaneous launch and the necessity for downloads. Ahmad also pointed out the economic reasons behind this shift, noting that game cards are more expensive than discs, and digital distribution offers higher margins for publishers.
Christopher Dring, Editor-In-Chief and Co-Founder of The Game Business, described Game-Key Cards as essentially "Christmas/birthday present boxes for wrapping up," reflecting a broader trend towards digital distribution driven by rising manufacturing costs, fewer game retailers, and a younger demographic less concerned with physical media.
Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 began on April 24 and sold out quickly, leading to a surge in fake auctions on eBay as fans attempt to combat scalpers.
