Critical Role Video Game Announcement Could Arrive 'Any Day,' Travis Willingham Confirms

The wildly popular Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting at an imminent announcement – potentially "any day now." This exciting news emerged during a recent interview with Business Insider. While details remain scarce regarding the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe, Willingham confirmed the development team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," he explained, highlighting the game's player agency.

Willingham, a prominent Critical Role cast member, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice acting stars Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its inception, Critical Role has expanded into a multifaceted entertainment franchise, notably including the hit Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will join Critical Role's expanding portfolio, but won't necessarily be directly tied to existing storylines. In December 2024, Willingham revealed to Rolling Stone that the team was actively pursuing a video game spinoff, nearing the end of a multi-year development process. Whether the game adapts a past campaign or introduces a fresh narrative within Exandria remains undisclosed.

While a late 2024 announcement was initially anticipated, Willingham's recent "any day now" comment suggests an imminent reveal. He previously elaborated on the challenges of the interactive entertainment landscape to Rolling Stone, stating, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels...There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

A release date for the Critical Role video game is yet to be announced. In the meantime, fans can eagerly await further details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
