EDGE誌の最新インタビューで、『Doom: The Dark Ages』の開発チームはゲームメカニクスに関する新たな洞察を明らかにしました。今作はシリーズ最も広大なステージを提供する一方で、物語性を優先したサンドボックススタイルの体験を実現します。

ゲームディレクターのHugo Martinとスタジオ責任者Marty Strattonは、インタビューでの重要なポイントを強調:

過去のDoomシリーズがテキストログに設定を埋め込んでいたのに対し、『The Dark Ages』ではより直接的なストーリーテリングを採用。中世の影響を強く受けた重厚な雰囲気に仕上げており、未来的な要素を抑制——象徴的な武器群もこの暗い美学に合わせて再設計されています。

シリーズの構造を維持しつつ、『Doom: The Dark Ages』は従来作品を超えるスケールの相互接続されたステージを提供。ダンジョン探索と広域探索を融合させ、キャンペーンは「幕」で章分けされ、閉所恐怖症的なダンジョンから始まり、広大なゾーンへ展開します。新要素としてドラゴンやメカの操縦が可能になり、新たなゲームダイナミクスが導入されました。

スレイヤーは多目的な新ツール——チェーンソー機能を備えたデュアルシールドを獲得。この武器は敵に投擲可能で、衝突する素材ごとに独自の物理反応を示します。シールドは素早いダッシュで距離を詰められるため、旧来の移動メカニクスが無い中で機動性の要に。さらに、難易度設定が可能で精密なタイミングを要求するパリィシステムも追加されています。

パリィは近接攻撃の「リロード」メカニクスとして機能し、成功時の接近戦で弾薬が補充——『DOOM Eternal』のチェーンソーシステムを彷彿とさせます。プレイヤーは3種類の近接スタイル(超高速のガントレット、バランス型シールド、強力だが低速のメイス)から選択可能です。
