Simu Liu Advocates for Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation

Author : Carter Update : Apr 20,2025

The potential revival of the Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has sparked new interest, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. Earlier this month, the project was officially declared canceled, but recent developments suggest a glimmer of hope. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a movie version of the 2012 game on X/Twitter, indicating his active involvement. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, signaling his determination to see the project through.

The film adaptation was initially announced in 2017, with martial arts icon Donnie Yen slated to star. However, the project vanished from the radar a year later, and just a few weeks ago, Yen confirmed its cancellation. In his statement, Yen expressed his deep involvement and disappointment, saying, "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights. I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

Hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise seemed extinguished until Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, responded to a social media post. The question of whether Liu will successfully secure the rights or propel the project forward remains open.

Sleeping Dogs, originally released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the gripping tale of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was highly praised, earning an 8/10 from IGN, yet it never received a sequel. Fans of the game are now eagerly watching to see if Liu's efforts will bring this beloved story to the big screen.
