PlayStation Portal Gets Cloud Game Streaming Beta Updates, Including Gameplay Capture Support
Sony is enhancing the PlayStation Portal experience with a new update focused on its Cloud Streaming Beta. This update, set to roll out later today, introduces several user experience and functionality enhancements to the remote play system's cloud capabilities.
A significant feature being added is the ability to sort games within the Cloud Streaming Beta catalog. Players can now organize their games by Name, Release Date, or by which titles were most recently added to PlayStation Plus, making navigation through the catalog more intuitive and user-friendly.
Another exciting addition is the capability to capture gameplay during a Cloud Streaming session. Users can utilize the familiar create menu options to take screenshots or record video clips. According to the PlayStation blog, video clips can be recorded at up to 1920x1080 resolution and up to three minutes in length, providing ample opportunity to share your favorite moments.
Gameplay will now pause under specific circumstances, such as when you open the PS Portal quick menu, enter rest mode using the power button, or if a system error message appears. However, note that the rest mode pause lasts only 15 seconds; if the Portal remains in rest mode beyond this, the cloud streaming session will disconnect. Additionally, pause functionality won't be available during online multiplayer sessions.Other enhancements include a queue system for when the streaming server is full, notifications for inactivity, and tools for user feedback. Sony has committed to ongoing updates and new feature additions based on user input.
The Cloud Streaming Beta remains exclusive to PlayStation Plus Premium members, allowing them to stream select PS5 games from the PS Plus Catalog directly on the PS Portal. An update last year transformed the Portal into more of a standalone cloud streaming device, and it appears Sony is dedicated to further refining this feature.
As cloud streaming becomes increasingly integral to the gaming landscape, it will be fascinating to observe how Sony's service develops in conjunction with the PlayStation Portal. The ability to easily capture and share gameplay moments while streaming adds a delightful layer of engagement for users.
