Marvel vs Capcom 2 Characters Join Capcom Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has hinted at potential returns for the fan-favorite original characters from Marvel vs Capcom 2. This exciting possibility comes ahead of the launch of the new "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection."
Potential Comeback for Marvel vs Capcom 2 Originals
Capcom Exploring Possibilities Based on Fan Response
Original Marvel vs Capcom 2 characters could "always" make an appearance in new games, according to Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto. The producer shared these thoughts during EVO 2024, the fighting game community's premier global tournament.
While we haven't seen a new Marvel vs Capcom installment since Infinite, Capcom is preparing to release "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics," a remastered compilation of classic titles from the series that Matsumoto is currently producing.
The famous crossover series pits Capcom characters against Marvel superheroes. Nintendo's June 2024 Direct featured a trailer for the upcoming collection, which includes six classic games - among them the beloved Marvel vs Capcom 2.
This particular entry introduced three original fighters: Amingo, a sentient cactus creature; Ruby Heart, the adventurous sky pirate; and SonSon, the monkey-like descendant of Capcom's arcade protagonist. While these characters have made minor cameos in later titles, they've largely been absent from recent series entries.
Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto suggested this collection provides the perfect opportunity to reintroduce these characters. "There's always a possibility," he said through a translator. "With this collection's release, more players will have the chance to experience these characters who were exclusive to the Versus series."
The producer hinted these originals might even appear in non-Versus titles if demand warrants it. "If fans show enough interest, who knows? We might see them in Street Fighter 6 or other fighting games. These re-releases help build awareness about our IP." He added that this approach gives Capcom's developers more creative options.
Future Marvel Collaborations Depend on Fan Engagement
The upcoming collection represents years of planning. "We've been negotiating with Marvel for three to four years," Matsumoto explained. "The timing finally aligned this year after extensive discussions."
He continued: "Our team has wanted to bring these classic Marvel titles back for years. It was always about finding the right moment when all parties agreed."
Matsumoto revealed Capcom's ambitions extend beyond this collection. "We want to create new Versus titles and revive older fighting games that lack modern support," he said. "We have big dreams and will take things step by step."
The producer emphasized Capcom's commitment to preserving its fighting game legacy. "We know fans want more classic titles on modern platforms - and we share that desire," he told IGN.
"Our current focus is re-releasing these classics to both educate and energize the community. While there are challenges - like collaborating with external partners - we believe this is the best approach for now," Matsumoto concluded.
