Author : Peyton Update : May 21,2025

During today's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo announced that nearly all Nintendo Switch games will be compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. However, some titles are receiving special "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" versions with unique enhancements. These include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Mario Party: Jamboree.

Each game's Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers distinct upgrades. Super Mario Party: Jamboree introduces "Jamboree TV," which includes mouse controls, audio recognition, enhanced rumble, and gameplay utilizing a new camera accessory.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will feature improved resolution, framerate, and HDR support. Additionally, they will benefit from a new service on the Nintendo Switch Online app called Zelda Notes. This service provides voice guidance to help locate Shrines and Koroks, and the ability to share creations in Tears of the Kingdom via QR code with friends.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is set to receive a new story exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, titled Star-Crossed World, along with enhanced graphics and framerates.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will offer mouse control capabilities, 4K resolution at 60fps, and HDR. Pokemon Legends: Z-A will also see improvements in resolution and framerates.

These upgraded games will be available in both physical and digital formats. Additionally, upgrade packs will be available for purchase for Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Party, and Kirby, allowing owners of the original Switch versions to upgrade.

The Direct also highlighted several third-party games receiving Nintendo Switch 2 Editions, including Civilization 7, which will support mouse controls, and Street Fighter 6, which will feature exclusive game modes for the Switch 2.

Nintendo teased these "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" games last week through a webpage footnote about the new Virtual Game Card system, noting that these editions cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch via Virtual Game Card.
