Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers to the series, even though it chronologically replaces Ys 3. While the game introduces a challenging encounter with Dularn, it's Ellefale, The Azure Queen of Death, who stands out as a formidable adversary. It's crucial for players to maintain a safe distance from this boss, as close proximity increases the likelihood of getting hit by her powerful attacks.

Ellefale can withstand a significant amount of damage on the game's normal difficulty, and she becomes even more daunting on higher difficulties. However, with the help of the Ignis Bracelet, overcoming this challenge is entirely possible.

How to Beat Ellefale, The Azure Queen of Death

To prepare for this battle, players should engage in some grinding to ensure their health exceeds 100. Utilizing Raval Ore to upgrade armor is advisable, though it's wise to conserve this ore for better armor later in the game.

Rushing into the fight as soon as it starts is ill-advised. Not only does this increase the risk of taking significant damage, but Ellefale is also out of range of basic attacks at the start. Instead, players should use the Ignis Bracelet to shoot fireballs at her from a distance, keeping to the far end of the arena to minimize the chance of getting hit. Despite her limited number of attacks, each one is potent and can quickly deplete the player's health.

Ellefale, The Azure Queen of Death Attacks

Individually, Ellefale's attacks might not seem too threatening, but they can restrict safe areas within the arena, making positioning critical. She has four main attacks in her arsenal:

  • A spinning disc attack
  • A vertical slashing attack
  • Multiple strikes of lightning
  • A slow-moving spinning sphere

Spinning Disc

Ellefale initiates this attack by launching a spinning disc towards the player. There's insufficient time to traverse the entire arena, so jumping is the only way to avoid it. Timing is essential; jump too early and you'll land on the disc, jump too late and you'll be hit before you're high enough. This attack, signaled by Ellefale raising her right arm, can be particularly punishing and adds intensity to the battle.

Vertical Slash

This attack is a thin, blade-like slash that is relatively easy to dodge by simply moving left or right. However, players must be prepared to handle multiple attacks simultaneously, such as jumping to avoid a spinning disc while moving to evade the slash. Ellefale telegraphs this move by raising her right arm.

Lightning Strike

This is one of Ellefale's most challenging attacks to evade. She signals it by leaning forward, at which point players should charge forward. When she raises both arms, players must retreat to the opposite end of the arena and jump. Lightning beams will target the player, and running or jumping towards Ellefale during this attack will result in damage. Jumping while retreating ensures safety from the lightning.

Spinning Sphere

Ellefale creates a slow-moving spinning sphere that restricts safe areas in the arena. While easy to outrun on its own, it can become problematic when combined with other projectiles, potentially trapping the player. This move is telegraphed by Ellefale raising both her wings.
