Sony Says You Won't Have to Link a PSN Account to Play Some of Its PC Games Anymore

Sony is dropping the PlayStation Network (PSN) account requirement for several of its PC games, starting with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launching tomorrow. This means players will no longer need a PSN account to play titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. The impact on other single-player PC ports remains unclear.

However, Sony isn't abandoning its online ecosystem entirely. Connecting a PSN account will still offer benefits, including early unlocks and resource bundles. These incentives include early access to suits in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle in God of War Ragnarök, bonus points and a skin in The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and a Nora Valiant outfit in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Sony promises more such benefits to come.

Here's a summary of the announced PC incentives:

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit. God of War Ragnarök: Armor of the Black Bear set (previously only available in New Game+) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP). The Last of Us Part II Remastered: +50 points for bonus features and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Nora Valiant outfit.

Sony acknowledges the mixed reception to its previous PSN requirement on PC, particularly the backlash from regions where PSN isn't available. This change follows a similar reversal for Helldivers 2 last year, where a mandatory PSN link was quickly retracted. While connecting a PSN account offers perks like trophy support and friend management, the option to play without one is now available for select titles.
