Sonic Rumble marks the franchise's inaugural multiplayer party game, allowing up to 32 players to vie against each other across varied levels and challenges. Sega describes the game as follows: "Players control a character from the Sonic series as they navigate a toy world crafted by the notorious Dr. Eggman, tackling perilous obstacle courses and hazardous arenas!"

As a free-to-play title, concerns about potential pay-to-win mechanics have surfaced. However, Sonic Rumble Director Makoto Tase addressed these concerns during an interview with Automaton at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 in September 2024. He clarified, "We’re aiming for a casual system that allows you to buy what you want quickly for a small, fixed amount, rather than a gacha system that offers items based on probability."

Following the release date announcement, Sega shared that Sonic Rumble has now surpassed 900k pre-registrations. Each milestone achieved in the pre-registration campaign unlocks exclusive in-game rewards to give players a head start.
