Sonic 3 Becomes Second Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie in North America, Only Behind Super Mario Bros.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has raced past another significant milestone, now ranking as the second highest-grossing video game movie adaptation in North America. With Keanu Reeves lending his voice to the iconic character Shadow the Hedgehog, the film has amassed over $204 million domestically after its fourth weekend, which alone brought in $11 million from 3,582 theaters. Globally, the movie's earnings have reached an impressive $384.8 million.
The latest Sonic installment has surpassed its predecessor, Sonic 2, in domestic box office earnings. However, it remains a distant second to the top-earning video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which raked in a staggering $574,934,330 in North America and a colossal $1,359,146,628 worldwide. While these records might be tough to beat, the upcoming Minecraft movie and the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie could pose a challenge.
Despite not reaching the top spot, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a resounding success for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4. For those curious about other successful video game adaptations, 2022's Uncharted stands in fourth place with $148,648,820 domestically, followed by the original Sonic movie, which earned $146,066,470.
