The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

The HBO adaptation of *The Last of Us Part II* will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the extensive physical training required for the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over moment-to-moment violent action. The game's mechanics necessitated a distinct physicality for Abby, contrasting with Ellie's more agile style. This distinction is less crucial in the show's narrative approach.

Druckmann elaborated, stating that finding an actress as talented as Dever was a priority. The game's gameplay required Abby to feel like a "brute," capable of physically overpowering opponents. The show, however, focuses on a different kind of intensity, shifting the emphasis to character drama rather than constant physical confrontations. While action sequences exist, their role is altered to serve the overall narrative.

Showrunner Craig Mazin added that the show presents an opportunity to explore a more physically vulnerable Abby, whose strength lies in her spirit. The show will delve into the origins of Abby's formidable nature and how it manifests. This exploration will unfold throughout the season and potentially beyond.

The "now and later" comment hints at HBO's intention to adapt *Part II* over multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's adaptation of the first game. Mazin previously indicated that *Part II*'s story is extensive enough to warrant this approach. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2 concludes with a natural breakpoint after seven episodes.

The character of Abby has unfortunately attracted significant online toxicity, with harassment directed towards Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. This harassment extended to their families. HBO took precautions during filming, providing Dever with additional security due to concerns about potential escalation.

Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) commented on the situation, reminding viewers that Abby is a fictional character and not deserving of real-world hate.
