Robert Eggers to Write and Direct Labyrinth Sequel

Author : Penelope Update : Mar 16,2025

Robert Eggers, fresh off his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth. Variety reports that Eggers will write and direct, collaborating with his The Northman co-writer Sjón. This follows a previous attempt at a sequel with Scott Derrickson attached, which ultimately didn't materialize. TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have now opted for Eggers' vision.

PlayReleased in 1986, the original *Labyrinth* starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who kidnaps the baby brother of Jennifer Connelly's character. Connelly then embarks on a fantastical journey through a dark fantasy world, aided by a cast of Jim Henson puppets, to rescue her sibling.

Eggers' plate is full. He's also directing a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England, featuring dialogue in Old English. One can reasonably expect some wolf-monster transformations.

Nosferatu, Eggers' recent Christmas release, is a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a real estate agent sent to Transylvania to conduct business with a mysterious count, only to find himself and his wife, Ellen, ensnared in a web of vampiric nightmares.

Nosferatu received four Oscar nominations: Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Read our Nosferatu review here.
