Nintendo's Influence on the New Game

After a nearly decade-long absence, Professor Layton returns. LEVEL-5, the series creator, revealed at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024 that Nintendo's encouragement was crucial to the development of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.

In a conversation with Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest creator), LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino explained that while they considered Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy a satisfying conclusion, Nintendo ("Company ‘N’") strongly urged a return to the steampunk world.

Hino stated (via AUTOMATON), "The series concluded, but individuals within the industry, particularly from ‘Company N,’ strongly encouraged us to create a new game."

Nintendo's involvement isn't surprising, given their close ties to the franchise, which flourished on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nintendo published many Layton titles and considers the series a significant DS success.

Hino added, "Their feedback convinced me that a new game, leveraging the capabilities of modern consoles, would allow fans to experience the series at its best."

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: A Closer Look

Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reunites Professor Layton and Luke Triton in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. Their new adventure involves solving a mystery connected to Gunman King Joe, a legendary gunslinger.

The game maintains the series' signature challenging puzzles, enhanced this time by collaboration with QuizKnock, renowned puzzle creators. This partnership is particularly exciting, given the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which featured Layton's daughter.
