Sources: Dragon Quest 7 Remake in Development
Square Enix, the publisher behind the Dragon Quest series, is reportedly preparing to revive another beloved entry: Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
As reported by MP1st, internal documents obtained by the outlet outline several unannounced projects in development, including a remake of the seventh mainline Dragon Quest game.
Notably, while other remakes in the documents are labeled as HD Remakes, this one is not—indicating it might be more than a simple visual upgrade or remaster. The full scope of the project remains unclear, and official details may not be revealed for some time.
The leaked timeline suggests this new version of Dragon Quest 7 is slated for release between early 2026 and 2027, aligning with Square Enix's next fiscal year and financial planning.
In other Dragon Quest news, remember that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake launches on October 30, 2025, for PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store), PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix has also confirmed the RPG will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2. Details on pre-order bonuses and a new Collector's Edition have also been shared recently.
Series creator Yuji Horii recently reassured fans that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has not been canceled. Initially announced in 2021 for the franchise's 35th anniversary—marking the first mainline title since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age—updates have been scarce. The last significant comment came in February, when Horii stated the Square Enix team is “working hard" on the project.
"I truly can't share any details yet, and I apologize for that," Horii said in May. "We are deeply committed to its development... All I can say is that the next title will be something special, and we're putting our all into it. Please stay tuned."
