Sony Makes PSN Accounts Optional for Select PS5 PC Ports
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and More: PSN Accounts No Longer Required on PC
Following the January 30, 2025 PC release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Sony will make PSN accounts optional for several PS5 PC ports. This was announced on PlayStation.Blog.
Affected games include Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming April 2025 release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. However, PC ports like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn will still require a PSN account.
Incentives for PSN Account Holders
While PSN accounts are no longer required, linking your account offers rewards: trophies, friend management, and in-game bonuses. Here’s a breakdown:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early access to the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Armor of the Black Bear set (previously only accessible in New Game+) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP).
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points to unlock extras, and Ellie’s Jordan’s Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony plans to add further incentives in the future, stating that PlayStation Studios will continue developing more benefits for PSN account users.
Previous Backlash Regarding Mandatory PSN Accounts
In 2024, Sony faced criticism for requiring PSN accounts for Helldivers 2 on Steam, citing "safety and security." This led to the game's delisting in over 170 countries lacking PSN support. Following significant negative feedback, Sony reversed its decision after three days. Similar issues arose with God of War Ragnarök's 2024 PC port, prompting negative Steam reviews. Sony hasn't fully clarified the reasoning behind requiring PSN accounts for some single-player games.
PSN’s limited availability (approximately 70 countries) has also been a point of contention, forcing players in unsupported regions to create accounts in supported ones, a process that involves sharing personal information with a third-party service, which has raised concerns among fans, especially considering Sony's history with data breaches.
