PSA: Days Gone Remastered $10 PS5 Upgrade Not Available for Game Redemptions via PS Plus
Days Gone Remastered was a highlight of Sony's recent State of Play showcase, but the $10 upgrade price tag has sparked controversy among PlayStation Plus subscribers. Sony's confirmed that this discounted upgrade is only available to those who purchased the PlayStation 4 version—either digitally or on disc. This excludes players who acquired Days Gone through PlayStation Plus, leaving them to pay the full $49.99 for the PS5 remaster.
Days Gone's availability through the now-defunct PS Plus Collection and as an April 2021 Essential monthly game means many players obtained it at no cost. This policy has led to considerable backlash online. PlayStation Plus subreddit posts are filled with comments from subscribers expressing their willingness to pay the $10 upgrade fee but choosing to forgo the game entirely due to the full price.
“They would have made more money if PS Plus players were eligible, even for a small upgrade fee,” commented squarejellyfish\_. Others echoed this sentiment, highlighting the lost potential revenue from players who would have paid the $10 but are now unwilling to pay the full price. “I would pay $10, but not full price,” stated teckn9ne79. Similar comments emphasized the lost opportunity for Sony, with dredizzle99 noting that many players would have likely paid the upgrade fee but won't purchase the game at full price.
Jackanyon95 pointed out the irony of Sony giving away the game for free initially, only to then restrict access to the discounted upgrade, effectively losing potential revenue. The sentiment was that the game, even remastered, didn't warrant the full price.
While some PS Plus subscribers understand Sony's likely financial calculations behind this decision, many still criticize the company's perceived stinginess. The situation has led to accusations of Sony prioritizing profit over goodwill with its hardcore fanbase.
