PlayStation Portable Successor in the Works

Author : Camila Update : Jan 20,2025

Sony reportedly eyes a return to the portable gaming console market, potentially challenging Nintendo's Switch dominance. This news, originating from Bloomberg, suggests an early-stage development project. However, it's crucial to remember that this is preliminary information; Sony may ultimately decide against releasing the console.

Veteran gamers will recall Sony's previous portable consoles, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita (Vita). The Vita's relative failure, despite some popularity, seemingly convinced Sony and other manufacturers that competing with smartphones in the portable gaming space was futile. The rise of mobile gaming, coupled with the departure of many competitors, left Nintendo as the primary player.

A Shifting Landscape

Recently, however, the landscape has shifted. The success of the Nintendo Switch, along with the emergence of devices like the Steam Deck and other handheld gaming systems, indicates a renewed interest in dedicated portable consoles. Simultaneously, mobile devices have seen significant advancements in processing power and graphical capabilities.

This improved mobile technology might actually encourage Sony's re-entry. The argument is that a high-quality, dedicated portable console could still carve out a niche market, appealing to gamers seeking a superior experience compared to smartphones.

For now, though, it's all speculation. To experience excellent mobile gaming in the meantime, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far)!
