Path of Exile 2 Expedition: Passives, Artifacts, Rewards Guide
Quick Links
In Path of Exile 2, you'll encounter four main endgame events on the Atlas map: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, originally from the Expedition League in Path of Exile, is revitalized as an endgame feature in PoE 2. This guide delves into how to find and initiate an Expedition, interact with the Detonator and Explosives, access the Delirium Passive Skill Tree, and explore the unique rewards available through the Expedition system.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, map nodes that guarantee an endgame event are marked with specific icons. An Expedition node is identified by a light blue icon with a spiral-like shape. To ensure an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet and place it into a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas.
Once you load into a map with an Expedition, explore until you find an area marked by Markers and a tent with one of four NPCs. These NPCs will introduce the basics of the event, but you'll need to understand how to interact with the mechanics yourself.
The Expedition's core involves a Detonator and Explosives, which you'll see indicated on the bottom-right of your screen. Your objective is to strategically place Explosives to trigger Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests:
- Runic Monsters: Spawn when Explosives are detonated near Red Markers. Larger Markers result in larger Runic Monster packs, which are then enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: Identified by a tooltip above a relic. They provide both beneficial and negative modifiers, such as increased Elemental damage from monsters but higher Rarity in Excavated Chest rewards.
- Excavated Chests: Appear when Explosives are detonated near Black Markers with the spiral Expedition symbol, containing event-specific rewards like Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
To use Explosives, click the button on your screen and hover over the Expedition area to see the effect radius. Ensure the Explosives' green circle covers the Markers you wish to activate without overlapping for optimal farming. After placing your Explosives, return to the Detonator to activate them, spawning empowered Runic Monsters and initiating the event.
If you die during an Expedition, the map resets, but you can retreat and return later. The event persists even if you leave the area, allowing you to detonate your Explosives, escape, and return to face all enemies at once with powerful AoE abilities.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Expeditions offer a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests. Bring these to Dannig in your Hideout to access the Expedition Map. Insert the Logbook into the bottom slot and click "Open Portals" to enter a significantly larger Expedition event with more Explosives.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map features a Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, who doesn't always spawn but has a higher chance in higher-level maps. Look for a skull on the minimap to locate Olroth. Strategically place your Explosives to reach this area and challenge him.
Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, crucial for enhancing your Expedition encounters.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Access the Expedition Passive Skill Tree through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu. This tree enhances the Expedition event by increasing Currency rewards, boosting Monster spawns, and amplifying Remnant effects.
To view your Expedition passives, open the Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, and look to the top right of the Atlas Skill Tree screen. The Expedition tree is marked by a glowing blue spiral with eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that increase Logbook and Olroth difficulty.
Earn 2x Expedition Passive Skill points by defeating Olroth, which you can use to unlock Notable nodes. Here are some key nodes and their effects:
Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
---|---|---|
Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1 total, but gives a 150% boost to radius, 100% boost to placement range, and 20% less enemy Life | N/A |
Disturbed Rest | Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks will drop by Runic Monsters, and Logbooks will always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts will drop from Runic Monsters, and Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters in Expeditions, 50% more Exotic Coinage drops from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
Frail Treasures | Expeditions always contain 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Prioritize 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations' for significant reward boosts with minimal downsides. Next, consider 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles' for enhanced rewards, though they increase difficulty. Avoid 'Extreme Archaeology' due to its drastic reduction in Explosives, which limits overall rewards.
PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards
### Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The primary rewards from Expeditions are Artifacts, which come in four types and can be collected like other Currencies. Each Artifact is used to trade with a specific Expedition vendor for different types of gear:
Reward | ![]() | Black Scythe Artifact | Order Artifact | Sun Artifact | Exotic Coinage |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Use | Used for trade with Gwennen | Used for trade with Tujen | Used for trade with Rog | Used for trade with Dannig | Refreshes the inventory of any Expedition vendor |
Gear | Weapons | Belts and Jewelry | Armor | Used to acquire other Artifacts | N/A |
Each Expedition features one of these vendors, so you can only access one vendor's inventory per encounter. Artifacts remain in your inventory after completing a map, so bring them to Expedition Maps to trade.
Exotic Coinage, another reward, can be used to refresh any Expedition vendor's inventory.
Expedition Logbooks Open A Unique Expedition Map To Progress
Expedition Logbooks, which drop from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are key to the Expedition Pinnacle system. Take them to Dannig to open the Expedition Map and explore various Expedition zones.
There's a chance for the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, to spawn in these maps. Defeating him rewards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, high-tier Currency, and a chance at exclusive Uniques. As you increase the difficulty of your Expedition Maps and Logbooks, Olroth's spawn rate and reward quality improve.
