Ninja Gaiden 4 Was the Surprise Reveal at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise for action game fans: the announcement of both Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," promising a revitalized franchise.
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Thirteen years after Ninja Gaiden 3, a new mainline entry arrives. Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja.
Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series icon. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) explains the choice of a new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while, we wanted a new hero to broaden the appeal. However, Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story, serving as a major challenge for Yakumo." Rest assured, Ryu remains playable and a significant presence.
Revitalized Combat
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature brutal, fast-paced combat, adding a new style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside his Raven Style. Director Masazaku Hirayama (Team Ninja) assures fans the action will feel authentically Ninja Gaiden, while Nakao highlights the blend of classic challenge and PlatinumGames' dynamic flair.
The game is nearing completion (70-80% complete), currently in the polishing phase. Producer Yasuda emphasizes the core action gameplay and promises future hands-on opportunities.
Release Date and Platforms
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remaster Now Available
Simultaneously, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, also included with Xbox Game Pass. This version features additional playable characters (Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel), fulfilling fan requests voiced since the 2021 Ninja Gaiden Master Collection release.
Producer Yasuda explains the timing: "We wanted to give players something to enjoy while they wait for Ninja Gaiden 4." He assures fans this remake caters to both veterans and newcomers.
Team Ninja's 30th anniversary celebration promises a thrilling return to the world of Ninja Gaiden. With a new protagonist, enhanced combat, and a remastered classic, 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for fans of the franchise. The collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames is a promising sign for the future of the series.
