Kojima Fans Notice Fun Link Between Death Stranding 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 Box Arts
Over the weekend, fans of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach were treated to an exciting new trailer, a confirmed release date, a collector's edition, box art, and much more. Amidst the excitement, one detail caught the eye of a keen observer, linking the game to director Hideo Kojima's previous work, Metal Gear Solid 2.
The box art for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach features Sam "Porter" Bridges, portrayed by Norman Reedus, cradling the child "Lou," a character familiar to players of the first game. Reddit user ReverseTheFlash highlighted this connection with a post titled "He did it again," juxtaposing the Death Stranding 2 box art with a slipcase from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The latter features Japanese singer Gackt in a strikingly similar pose, holding a child.
While the images are not identical, the similarities between them are unmistakable and add a fun layer of nostalgia for fans. This connection also serves as a reminder of the intriguing and sometimes bewildering promotional efforts surrounding Metal Gear Solid 2. Gackt was prominently featured in various promos leading up to the game's release, including special slip-covers that have since become obscure collectibles.
For those curious about Gackt's involvement, Hideo Kojima provided an explanation back in 2013. He revealed that Gackt was chosen for Metal Gear Solid 2's TV commercials because "MGS1 was about DNA & 'MGS2' MEME. DNA consists 'AGTC', adding 'K' of KOJIMA becomes 'GACKT.'" This playful reasoning underscores Kojima's creative approach to marketing.
Given the new trailer's strong Metal Gear vibes, it's no wonder fans are drawing these connections. While the similarities might just be a reflection of recurring themes in Kojima's work, they certainly provide a delightful opportunity for speculation and reminiscing about past promotional campaigns, especially those featuring Gackt.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch on June 26, 2025, and will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
