FFXIV Mobile Version Listed in China's Lineup of Approved Games
Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a mobile Final Fantasy XIV game is in development by Tencent and Square Enix for the Chinese market. This article delves into the details of this potentially significant collaboration between the two gaming giants.
Square Enix and Tencent's Potential FFXIV Mobile Venture
Largely Unconfirmed Collaboration
Niko Partners' recent report details 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. Among these is a mobile version of Square Enix's popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent. Other notable titles on the list include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, along with mobile games based on Marvel's Snap and Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile adaptation circulated last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed this project.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, the Final Fantasy XIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information stems primarily from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.
Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market makes this partnership a logical step for Square Enix, aligning with their declared strategy of expanding to multiple platforms. Square Enix announced earlier in May their intention to aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy for their key franchises, including Final Fantasy.
