Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, but Release Still Distant

Deltarune Chapter 4 Progress

Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, recently shared a development update for Deltarune in his newsletter. While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, a simultaneous release of Chapters 3 and 4 on PC, Switch, and PS4 remains some time away.

Fox confirmed that Chapter 4 is largely playable, requiring only polishing. All maps are finished, battles are functional, but minor adjustments remain: two cutscenes need refinements, one battle requires balancing and visual improvements, another needs a better background, and two battle endings need enhancement. Despite this, three friends who played the chapter offered positive feedback.

The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant challenges, especially given this is the first major paid release since Undertale. Fox emphasized the need for thorough testing and quality assurance. Before launch, the team must complete:

  • Testing new features
  • Finalizing PC and console versions
  • Japanese localization
  • Comprehensive bug testing

Chapter 3 development is finished (as per Fox's February newsletter). Early work on Chapter 5 has even begun.

The newsletter included snippets of Ralsei and Rouxls' dialogue, Elnina's character description, and a new item, GingerGuard. Although the three-year wait since Chapter 2 disappointed some, the expanded scope of Chapters 3 and 4 (longer than Chapters 1 and 2 combined) generates excitement. Fox anticipates a smoother release schedule for future chapters following the launch of Chapters 3 and 4. A specific release date remains unannounced.
