Gearbox Software co-founder, Randy Pitchford, explicitly stated that he wouldn't classify Borderlands 4 as "open world," citing unsuitable connotations for the game. While Pitchford didn't detail the specific differences, he highlighted a clear distinction between guided gameplay sequences and free-roaming exploration.

Nevertheless, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the franchise's most ambitious title yet. Players will enjoy seamless movement across all accessible areas without loading screens.
