Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?
In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) might be needed to influence companion choices before and after the Netherbrain battle. (Spoilers ahead!)
Freeing Orpheus or Siding with the Emperor?
This choice hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that releasing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids.
After the Netherbrain encounter (if failed), the Astral Prism presents the choice: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.
-
Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is sacrificed, his knowledge absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. This grants a combat advantage against the Netherbrain but might alienate players attached to these characters.
-
Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor aligns with the Netherbrain. Party members risk Illithid transformation. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. Interestingly, he's willing to become a Mind Flayer to save his people if asked.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Illithid transformation; choose Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's path might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
Morality is subjective. Orpheus's claim as rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny, makes siding with him appealing to Githyanki players. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might feel overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions affect the wider world.
The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but it's a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, so strategic choices can lead to favorable outcomes.
