Apple Unveils iPhone 16e: A Budget-Friendly Option
On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, the newest addition to its lineup as the most budget-friendly option. This model replaces the 2022 iPhone SE, marking a shift from the significant discounts the SE series was known for. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e narrows the gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders begin on Friday, Feb. 21, with the official release following on Friday, Feb. 28.
The iPhone 16e introduces Apple’s new C1 cellular modem, a critical component that could affect connectivity. Apple has a strong track record with in-house chips like the M-series for computers and the A-series for mobile devices. However, the performance of the C1 modem remains to be seen. Hopefully, lessons from the "Antennagate" scandal, where the iPhone 4 faced signal issues due to antenna design, have been applied to ensure robust connectivity in the iPhone 16e.

From the front, the iPhone 16e looks nearly identical to the iPhone 14, featuring a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and 1,200-nit peak brightness. While not as sharp or bright as the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e includes the Action button and a USB-C port but misses out on the Camera Control feature.
The back of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with a single 48MP camera, similar to the iPhone SE. It shares much in common with the iPhone 16's main camera but lacks advanced features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera is identical to the iPhone 16, bringing Face ID to the iPhone 16e.
The iPhone 16e is encased in aluminum with a glass back and Apple’s Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple claims this Ceramic Shield is "tougher than any smartphone glass," a newer version boasts being "two times tougher." This raises questions about the durability of the older Ceramic Shield, especially given the wear observed on the iPhone 16 during reviews.
The internals of the iPhone 16e illustrate Apple’s product stratification. While it uses an "A18" chip like the iPhone 16, it has a 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. This may result in a performance step down, but the Neural Engine remains, allowing access to Apple Intelligence features.
The iPhone 16e's $599 price point makes it Apple's cheapest phone, yet it’s a smaller discount compared to the 2022 iPhone SE's $429 launch price, which offered a nearly 50% discount from the then $799 iPhone 13. While the iPhone 16e’s design is more recent, it lacks the deep discount of its predecessor.
The performance of the iPhone 16e will be crucial. With competitive Android options like the OnePlus 13R around $600, Apple faces a challenge in attracting buyers outside its ecosystem.
