Adult's First LEGO Buy: Mario Set, No Regrets

Author : Riley Update : Apr 23,2025

As a practical person, my approach to spending money is typically focused on necessities, with the occasional indulgence in video games when they're on sale. However, my perspective shifted last year when I reconsidered the idea of purchasing a LEGO set. Despite my childhood love for LEGO, I had moved away from it as I grew older, largely due to the high costs associated with these sets. LEGO sets linked to popular movie or video game franchises tend to be pricier, which is why it took me a while to justify buying the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It had been on sale since October of last year for under $50, but it was only recently that I decided my desk could use a unique potted plant.

My interest in this set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. Being a long-time fan of the Mario franchise, this set seemed like the perfect way to showcase my enthusiasm. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets that would complement my desk, none capture the whimsical and slightly eerie charm of the Piranha Plant.

Having now built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I'm tending to my own little Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process itself was immensely enjoyable; it took me an afternoon to complete, yet it was engaging enough to keep my attention throughout. This is my first LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has definitely piqued my interest in acquiring more.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

As I mentioned earlier, LEGO sets can be quite expensive, with new adult-targeted sets often priced at $200 or more. It's easy to get carried away and spend too much on these delightful but costly items. For me, the fact that the Mario LEGO set was under $50 made it a worthwhile purchase. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me justify the cost. Is that joy worth more than $50? Probably. But that's the maximum I'm willing to spend.
