Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development
The announcement of an Ōkami sequel at The Game Awards ignited a wave of excitement among fans, yet details remain scarce. A recent IGN interview with the project leads shed some light, confirming the sequel as a direct continuation of the original game's storyline. Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed this, clarifying that the sequel picks up where the first game left off. While director Hideki Kamiya playfully responded with "I wonder..." when asked about Amaterasu's presence in the trailer, Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it was indeed the sun goddess.
While unsurprising to many fans, the sequel's announcement sparked discussion regarding the existing sequel, Ōkamiden. This Nintendo DS title, starring Amaterasu's child Chibiterasu, received mixed reviews, partly due to its handheld platform and the absence of key members from the original development team. Regarding Ōkamiden, Hirabayashi acknowledged its existence and the varied fan reception, stating that the new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's story.
Ōkami's ending inherently suggests a sequel. Without revealing spoilers, the game concludes with Amaterasu and another character embarking on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for new challenges and adventures.
However, further details remain elusive. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. According to Hirabayashi, substantial updates are unlikely for some time.
