Before upgrading, you need the Ice Staff itself. Acquire it either from the Mystery Box or by collecting its three components. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus (via the Door to Nowhere) is crucial.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals rapidly using the Ice Staff. These crystals reside in underground Dark Aether lanterns (black frames, purple fire). Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid speed. Optimize your route by strategically waiting for lantern spawns to minimize travel time. A recommended route involves the tomb area, the Shrine of the Hierophants, and the lantern near the Subterranean Temple entrance. Archibald's quote confirms successful completion. Enter the Dark Aether Nexus afterward.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes

Locate three floating rocks with glowing purple Runes in the Dark Aether Nexus. Each Rune displays a unique symbol (which varies per game). Use the Ice Staff to shoot each Rune; a hitmarker confirms success. Shooting the Rune causes the rock to descend, improving visibility. A scoped weapon can enhance accuracy. The order of shooting the rocks is inconsequential.

Step 3: Solving the Rune Symbol Puzzle

Find a stone wall replacing a portal back to the main map within the Dark Aether Nexus. Return to the corresponding area on the main map; a wall with Runic symbols will appear. Shoot the three symbols matching those you noted on the floating rocks. The portal will open (regardless of accuracy), but incorrect symbols will result in a mid-air drop back into the Nexus. Multiple failures may require waiting for the next round. Correct symbols lead to a floating rock and a purple orb. Interact with the orb.

Step 4: Escorting the Soul Chest Orb

The activated Orb will move; follow it and kill zombies nearby. Killed zombies release purple energy fueling the Orb's movement.
