Tom Hardy Demands More Stunt Oscars for Venom
Following the Academy's announcement to establish an Oscar for Stunt Design, actor Tom Hardy has raised concerns about whether a single category adequately recognizes the field.
In an exclusive IGN interview promoting his upcoming film Havoc, Hardy shared: "A single Oscar feels somewhat overdue and insufficient. While it's a positive step forward, I believe the recognition should be more comprehensive."
The acclaimed star of Venom and Mad Max: Fury Road elaborated: "Stunt Design alone doesn't capture the full scope of the craft. The design aspect serves as an umbrella term for numerous specialized disciplines that deserve individual acknowledgment. These professionals - whether coordinating equestrian sequences, vehicular stunts, high falls, fire gags, fight choreography, or underwater work - form the unseen backbone of action cinema."
"This entire community remains largely uncelebrated despite their physical sacrifices. They're the ones who literally bring the thrill to our screens. Having many friends in this field, I'd strongly advocate for additional subcategories to properly honor their diverse skills."
This perspective finds support from Havoc director Gareth Evans, whose groundbreaking work on The Raid series redefined action cinema benchmarks.
"Subcategories would be ideal," Evans noted. "Though awards shouldn't drive artistic motivation - that would be the wrong approach - this overdue recognition validates decades of professional excellence. It's perplexing why such acknowledgment took a century to materialize."
The Stunt Design Oscar will debut at the 2028 Academy Awards, marking exactly 100 years since the Oscars' inception. Audiences can experience Hardy's latest performance sooner - Havoc premieres on Netflix this Friday, April 25th, featuring the actor in another intense action role.
