Author : Aaliyah Update : Feb 28,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories both scorching and sweet. I'm feeling a bit wiser after this past season, and incredibly grateful for your company. As autumn arrives, I want to express my sincere appreciation – you've all been the best gaming companions one could ask for! Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a prime example. This collection finally brings Miles Edgeworth's two adventures, previously unavailable in English, to a wider audience. Building upon established plotlines, the second game enhances the first, making it a must-have for fans.

These investigations offer a unique perspective from the prosecution's standpoint. While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases – the shift in narrative and presentation is refreshing. Edgeworth's personality adds a distinct flavor to the gameplay. The pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney titles, potentially leading to some lengthy cases, but overall, fans of the main series will find this sub-series highly enjoyable. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, including a gallery with art and music, a story mode for relaxed playthroughs, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A convenient dialogue history is also included, a welcome addition to this type of game.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between its two games. The official localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extra content makes this a complete package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've already enjoyed the other titles, this is a no-brainer.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up to the obscure NES title stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is included for those seeking a less demanding experience.

The core gameplay remains familiar, with protagonist Yumetaro's star serving multiple purposes. New collectibles add replayability, unlocking customization options. While not excessively long, the game's difficulty is high, demanding precision and strategic use of Yumetaro's abilities and the environment. Frequent checkpoints mitigate frustration, while charming visuals and music help maintain the enjoyable pace.

Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its own identity. Fans of the original will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely give it a try. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – the difficulty remains high, even on the easier setting.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain captivating. The game's weapon system, featuring a gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon, creates a satisfying rhythm of combat and resource management. Mastering this system is crucial for survival.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinct atmosphere. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version delivers a solid experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

This licensed game caters heavily to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The writing and meta-systems will resonate strongly with those familiar with the series. However, for non-fans, the limited number of repetitive mini-games and a storyline that requires prior knowledge significantly diminish the appeal. Even for fans, the focus on fan service might overshadow the overall gameplay experience.

While the presentation is good, and the unlockables might keep dedicated fans engaged, the game lacks longevity and broad appeal.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles previously unavailable in English. The package includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game features save states, rewind, display options, and a gallery. The full localization of all three games is a significant achievement.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure, and The Wing of Madoola is an ambitious but sometimes uneven title. None are groundbreaking, but they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's Japanese catalog.

Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these titles and their long-awaited English release make this a worthwhile purchase.
