"Switch 2 Controller Compatible Only with GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms"

The much-anticipated arrival of Nintendo GameCube titles to Nintendo Switch Online is set to coincide with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this exciting update, a classic GameCube controller is also on its way. However, there's a catch—small print in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer suggests that this new controller might be exclusively for GameCube games. The statement reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the controller's use may be restricted to GameCube titles on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and not extend to other Switch 2 games.

However, as noted by VGC, past experiences with similar disclaimers on other Nintendo controllers suggest that these limitations might not be strictly enforced. Enthusiasts have often found ways to use retro controllers more broadly. Interestingly, this particular disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer, adding a layer of confusion.

Despite this, the GameCube controller's design, with its sufficient buttons, could potentially handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This might be a case of managing expectations or preventing confusion for those attempting to use it in unintended ways, such as using it like a mouse.

For those not interested in the new GameCube controller, there's good news: Nintendo has confirmed that the existing GameCube Controller adapter, popular since the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via USB port. This offers continued utility for those who already own the adapter.

The classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be available at the console's launch, although exact pre-order dates remain undisclosed. Pre-orders have been affected by U.S. tariffs, causing some uncertainty.

This significant update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will provide subscribers with access to a range of beloved titles from the 2000s, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, all set to be available at the summer launch. The library is expected to grow, with teased additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more in the future.
