Originally announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays, pushing the release to 2025. Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that the decision to postpone stemmed from the need for further debugging and review to ensure the highest quality. "As we approached the end of development, we realized through our debugging process that more review was necessary," Sakiyama noted.

Tatsuya Ogushi, another Game Director on the project, emphasized the team's cautious approach: "We started by thoroughly understanding the situation. After discussions with Sakiyama about the quality line, it was evident that many aspects required further attention and refinement."

The remaster is not just a standalone project but a crucial first step in the broader revival of the Suikoden franchise. Rui Naito, the series Producer, outlined the vision behind this endeavor: "This project marks the beginning of our efforts to revive the Suikoden IP. It was essential not to falter at this stage. Our directive was clear: 'make it solid.'"

Naito stressed the importance of a strong start, warning against releasing a substandard product: "If we launch something half-baked at this juncture, it could hinder our efforts to revive the series. We needed to ensure that Suikoden I & II HDR would set a solid foundation for future projects."

During the recent Gensou Suikoden Live on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled several upcoming projects aimed at expanding the Suikoden universe. Naito described the live event as the second step in the IP's revival, although he remained uncertain about the total number of steps required to fully bring back the franchise.

Among the announcements were "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of Suikoden 2's story, marking Konami Animation's first foray into anime production. Additionally, "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP," a new mobile game, was revealed. Both projects have released teaser trailers, though specific release dates remain undisclosed.

Konami's commitment to the Suikoden franchise extends beyond these projects, with more events and initiatives planned to reignite interest and bring the series back into the spotlight.
