Square Enix Unveils Octopath Traveler 0 for Nintendo Switch
Nintendo's latest Direct: Partner Showcase revealed a new entry in the Octopath Traveler series, Octopath Traveler 0, coming to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on December 4, 2025.
For the first time in the series, Octopath Traveler 0 allows players to create a fully customizable character, embarking on a journey of restoration after their hometown of Wishvale is destroyed by fire.
The debut trailer showcases the franchise's signature HD-2D art style, turn-based combat, and a new feature to rebuild Wishvale by designing and placing homes and structures. Square Enix confirms over 30 recruitable party members and the return of the Break & Boost battle system.
While the concept of a prequel may sound familiar, this title integrates narrative threads from the mobile spin-off, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which launched in Japan in 2020 and globally in 2022.
In a blog post, Square Enix clarified that while inspired by that game's story and mechanics, Octopath Traveler 0 was built from the ground up as a complete console and PC RPG. It features expanded narrative content, new character origins, full voice acting, and the town-building system.
"The title Octopath Traveler 0 symbolizes a journey you define yourself," stated producer Hirohito Suzuki. "Whether you're a series veteran or a newcomer, we've crafted original experiences for all players. I'm excited for everyone to discover this new story."
The original Octopath Traveler debuted on Nintendo Switch in 2018, with a multiplatform release following later. Octopath Traveler 2 was released in 2023.
The same Nintendo Direct presentation featured a second HD-2D announcement: The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, an all-new action RPG.
